A blessing in the kitchen |

Broan QS130BL Pros: Quiet fan on setting one, Light like the surface of the sun, Standard setup, Easy install. Cons: low CFM on setting one of fan, $7 light bulbs The best thing about the Broan and most likely the reason you are looking at it is how quiet it is. At 1.5 Sones it is practically a whisper with the fan on. Let me tell you it's a blessing and worth the money for that fact alone. My wife (who does most the cooking, love you) would never turn on our old range hood. I would come into the house to find a haze of smoke and grease hanging in the air and her working in the kitchen. I would turn on our old hood, 5.5 sones and you could not yell at each other to have a conversation. What I needed was replacement that was quiet (so the wife would use it) gave some light and would fit in the standard opening that was under $150. With the money I saved I could buy cleaners to wash the grease off the walls in the kitchen. HA HA The Broan QS130BL does this in stars. You will not find a quieter, standard setup, range hood for under $150. Easy to operate, easy to clean, easy to install, super quite and tons of light, I am so happy with it.

Very attractive addition to my kitchen |

Nice fit & finish. I especially like the flush look of the underside. The fan is quiet on low, and not bad on high. Mfg says only halogen & incandescent bulbs will work. But, I used 6 watt LED bulbs, super efficient, and I like the look. You need dimmable if you want to use them on low & high lighting settings.

    Nice range hood |

This range hood definately has a different look to it, one that has my husband confused as to whether he likes or dislikes it. I love it. The hood brings the light up a bit higher than traditional hoods. It has two fan settings and a low/high light settings, along with two lights. We used halogen flood lights and on the high setting it really lights up the entire range and surrounding counter space. Unlike traditional hoods, it has a clean and finished look underneath.

    So-so, just |

Beautiful lighting, exceptional finish. Flimsy, light-weight (thin) metal, does not hold a straight line at the top unless mounted with extra screws (not provided). Lots of interior sharp edges to cut your hands. Motor is very quiet, even at the top setting. Does not effectively draw from front elements/burners at the slow speed, the fan is mounted too close to the rear to be effective at this speed. Needs thoughtful re-design, in a realistic setting (like in a kitchen?).

Fan on low too low ~ lights not recessed deeply enough |
    Verified Purchase

I really love the design of the hood. It doesn't come down as low as the one it replaced, so it gives a more open look. It's very modern & sleek looking. I love that it has two settings for the lights, low and high. As others have said, the fan on the low setting is too low; there is quite a disparity between low and high. The high setting is A-OK. You should strongly consider this point if you like to use your range hood light as a night light: the lights on the hood are not hidden; therefore, they are like flashlights aimed in your face. It's very annoying. I used the recommended Sylvania 50W Par 20 bulbs. I uploaded a picture if you would like to see what you can expect. It is the picture with the black range hood and a black smooth-top range, the 7th picture as of this writing. If the bulbs were slightly more recessed, this problem could be avoided. I plan to contact the company and ask if I might be able to use smaller, regular, non-halogen light bulbs that will be hidden when they're screwed in. I had an electrician install it, and when he turned the fan on, just as two other reviewers said--it sounded like the fan blades were hitting something & was very noisy. When it hit the the speed it was set on, the noise went away. I am so glad that the electrician was able to fix the noise. He said he could fix it, and he did. I would give this 5 stars were it not for the fan on the low setting & that the lights are not recessed enough.

Unbelievable customer service from Broan! |

The range hood Broan QS130BL 30-Inch Allure Range Hood, Blackarrived with Amazon's usual dead-on-time delivery. When I took the unit out of the box, the aluminum filters were both dented - looking at the box, I noticed it had been hit with something pointy. It looked like my only option was to send the whole thing back and get a replacement. I called Broan to see what they would say. First, within 10 seconds of making the call, I was connected directly to an English-speaking customer service person with a Wisconsin accent. I explained the situation and without hesitation, she offered to send me a new set of filters at no cost to me. Good luck finding that kind of customer service these days. If the hood is 1/2 as good as this experience, I am a Broan customer for life!

    Good Product |

I purchased this product because I wanted to match my stainless steel appliances. I notice this hood was larger than my 1980's era hood that I inherited from the previous owner of my home. So, it was time for an update. The installation was not too hard for a DIY type person, such as myself. I purchased the hood in a chain home improvement store and didn't look for the reviews on Amazon like I normally do to see how others view the quality of a product. I was shocked to learn that Amazon sells the hood that I purchased for $100 less than I purchased it at the store. Wow! That is a big difference. If my cheapness weren't out-weighed by my laziness, I'd take the hood back for a refund and purchase it again on Amazon. Oh well, lesson learned.

Some design and quality issues |
    Verified Purchase

Delivery was as promised. Overall finish was very good and the unit is decently quiet. The design issue is with the unit shape and location of lights in that they are not shielded out of direct line of vision to the bulb. Light on the stove top is good but if the bonehead designer thinks that staring at a halogen bulb is stylish, they need more schooling in reality. The glare is very obnoxious even at my height of 5'10" so I can only imagine how upset a shorter person would be with it. I'll build my own glare shields from stainless steel to remedy this oversight on the part of their designers but very few people have the capability of doing this modification. The build quality issue was with installation of the rivets in the back holding the leaf springs that retain the filters. The rivets were improperly installed, protruding about 3/16" from the back of the unit which prevented mounting flush to the wall. More places for crud to accumulate aren't things I'll leave unaddressed in a new kitchen. I drilled out the offending rivets and installed new, enabling a tight fit to the wall and an easy seam to seal.

The focal point of your kitchen |
    Verified Purchase

This thing is beautiful. Over the last couple years, we have been replacing our "builders grade" white appliances with stainless. We debated on whether to go with an "over the stove" microwave or a range hood. We finally opted for the range hood and eventually landed on this one. It looks great! With the way it is constructed, this shown ALOT of steel from the front. That's great! It makes the whole stove area look modern and really frames things out as the focal point of the kitchen. A couple words of warning. First, I LOVE the look of the halogen bulbs but order them from amazon. I had to replace one already and at the local Sears store, they were asking $22 for just one halogen bulb!!!! The next word of warning is buy a pair of work gloves. Sheet metal will shred your hands if not careful. For us, our non-ducted installation was a breeze (or would have been if not for the shoddy construction practices of our builder). Ducted installation seemed a bit more involved but for us, it was really mostly a matter of removing the parts we DIDNT need! The wiring that fed our old range hood worked great! I reused the old strain relief grommet and - something my dad would have frowned upon - reused the old wire nuts too! From there it was just connecting white to white and black to black with the wire nuts and attaching the bare ground wire with a screw! Just physically Mounting the hood proved the more challenging part. For us, the holes they provided for mounting didnt line up with anything to screw it to. So, after fussing with it for a while, I finally gave up and decided to do it the right way! A couple scrap 1x3's screwed to the underside if the cabinetry gave plenty of mounting surface. From then on it was easy. Finally - and embarrassingly- (I'm putting this last so hopefully no one reads it) Remove the knobs from your stove. Can't tell you how many times I accidentally turned on the gas just by leaning over the knobs. And finally - and heartbreakingly - as you are mounting the new hood, lay a piece of cardboard or something over the stove. They tell you to do this in the instructions, but I thought it was to protect the STOVE. Turns out, stove grates can scratch up Stainless Steel pretty well. Now, although the hood still looks great(!) all I'm going to see are the scratches we left. :-(

    good enough, not great |
    Verified Purchase

I was looking for something functional and inexpensive. I got what I paid for. My previous fan did not duct to the exterior, which makes it essentially useless, so my main objective was to correct that. If I were buying a range hood again, I would not purchase one designed for either ducted or non-ducted use. There is a little plastic piece to cover the opening on top of the hood if you are ducting to outside, but it's not particularly effective. As a result, some air ends up recirculating right back into the kitchen. Not so great. I guess I could put tape over the opening, but who wants that? Next time I'd at least get a model designed only for exterior ducting. The hood looks nice enough. Still, function over form for me, hence only 2 stars.
