    Glad I bought this |

I'm not even a "beginner" as an "artist"- I'm someone who aspires to be a beginner. This set of sketching pencils would be a good purchase for anyone, beginner on up. The pencils apply smoothly on paper, and the kit comes with all the essentials for a hopeful beginner like me, including a kneadable eraser. For the price, this is a great set.

Black Graphite Pencil Breaks Easily |
    Michigan, USAVerified Purchase

These pencils are great. They are very high quality and work nicely. There's only one problem I have with these pencils. The black graphite pencil, the one on the far right in the picture, it breaks very easily if you drop it on a hard surface like wood or tile floors. So I would recommend not dropping that pencil.

I would have given these pencils a four or five star rating but every one I've used so far (about six) have been broken up inside and they're almost used up already. I won't be buying this brand again.

    Verified Purchase

This is a lovely product. I purchased one for myself as a want to be artist a while back and really am happy with the results. So, this is a gift for one of our sons who is an accomplished artist who is out of work and disabled. This set will hopefully get him back to the sketch pad and help him spend some happy time doing something relaxing and mind/time consuming. I recommend it!

I think this is a lovely set for sitting at your desk, sketch pad in hand and the sketching pencils from this nice sized pencil set. I like the various sizes and small thin pieces of charcoal. They all fit nicely in my hand while drawing. I also like the charcoal itself. It is contained on the paper and looks good. I am a weekend sketch artist and there are many pencils to choose from and I like them. I would recommend this to anyone who is fond of drawing with the charcoal medium.

    New to me... |
    Nashville, TNVerified Purchase

I have never used this brand of drawing pencils, but I have to admit I am as proud of these as the German set I got years ago. I like other figured anything made anywhere but here has to be fancy...not. These were affordable and up to par with the best that I have used. I use to be a huge chalking fan, but have since stopped and have no opinion on these accept to say they "are Chalk" like the rest. I particularly am a fan of the sketching pencil in this set...pretty amazing that it does it's job perfectly unlike or in a different way that a regular drawing or standard pencil does if that makes sense. Like nothing I have used before. Worth a try at this price.

I only needed this for my college intro to art class and it served it's purpose.. The kneaded eraser could have been of better quality and same with the rectangular eraser. Overall the kit served me well. I would probably buy it again but I would purchase separate erasers.

    Great starter set |
    Verified Purchase

This was my first set of real drawing pencils. They will always be special to me. I felt like a real artist. I have bought many more sets since such as TowBow, Steadtler, derwent, and Faber castell. These are of course not any of those but are surprisingly decent for a dirt cheap pencil. They are definitely great for beginners. Try them!

Great price but the pencils fall apart when sharpening. I use the kneadable erasers more than anything else. This could be good for a beginner art student with not much to spend.

Royal & Langnickel Pencil Set |
    Verified Purchase

I bought this set along with the Royal Langnickel 104 piece Artist Easel Set, which is a great case, and I highly recommend. This drawing set is no different, it is a really nice set! If you have never used pencils before, it is great learning! I used to love charcoal, and haven't used it in a while, I am excited to use the charcoal in here. I tried out all of the pencils, charcoals, etc in this set and am very satisfied with the results. The erasers are also very nice. I haven't had to use the sharpener yet, but it seems like it is a good one. I am very happy with this purchase, and would definitely purchase again! Great value, and very nice materials!

    Meh.... |
    Verified Purchase

They were pretty good pencils for the price.^^ I mean they served their purpose well, and I was quite happy with them, except for when they needed sharpening. As you know, after using a pencil its gets dull and you need to sharpen it. When sharpening these pencils the lead falls out before its even sharpened all the way. Not all of the pencils were like this, but a few were which disappointed me a bit. I eventually gave up sharpening it because the pencil was almost gone. T.T The kneadable eraser was very soft and very small. Like really small. I wasnt expecting it to be huge, but a bit bigger than what it was. It was easier to change the form of the eraser but the eraser did not erase well at all; it was just waay to soft to actually erase something without changing the form of the eraser. But hey, then again it could of just been me not knowing how to use it correctly. I don't know. Other than those few things they are some pretty good pencils and I would buy them again. I can't say much about the charcoal sense I haven't used them.

    Great Deal! |
    Verified Purchase

I was fortunate enough to buy this when the price was just over $5, which was a fantastic deal. I really loved the graphite pencils; they were clean, sharpened with ease, and didn't crumble. The sticks are also nice, although I scarcely use them. My one note is that the charcoal wasn't as rich, deep, and easy to manipulate as other brands, i.e. General's. I definitely recommend having some sandpaper at hand to sharpen sticks or even the pencils. note~I'm a 14-year-old Advanced Art student, so it's plausible that my standards aren't as high as a more experienced artist! Also, I purchased this in early January.

    High Quality |
    Verified Purchase

My art teacher was very impressed with this complete set, it contained all that she requests of us in supplies and the quality it excellent. The kneading eraser leaves a lot to be desired since it is very small and breaks easily when you are trying to pull/clean it. If the kneading eraser was double the size I know the cost would be higher, but the brand name is all to look for on pencils, charcoals and even the white eraser are excellent! No need for a mars eraser if you order this package, put its never a bad investment to purchase a Mars eraser, if you are truly practicing to be an artist its a must to add to your art supplies and this package is quality and for the price - a double deal. Purchase two since most of the time a standard class wants you to have 2- of the 2B pencils. There is only one of each pencil in this package.

    A nice little set |
    Verified Purchase

This is a very affordable set of good-quality drawing pencils and charcoal. The pencils range in hardness from 4H all the way to 8B. There are three different types of charcoal as well at different hardnesses. I was a little disappointed that there was no F pencil for fine details, but everything else I need is there, so I'm not inclined to complain at this price. If anything, the set contains several extra things that I don't need. It would be nice if I could find a set that just included pencils, as I need to restock every few months or so. I don't need a new pencil sharpener every time, and I rarely ever use charcoal. The included erasers are pretty tiny too, though they are somewhat useful. But even if you took out all of these "extras," the price still beats my local art store by a mile, so I'll take it, and I'd recommend this to any pencil artist.

This set of Sketching pencils met my expectations for quick sketching and light doodling. There are a few things that I would change but none of them compromise the pencil.
  74. 4 out of 5

    Fantastic with minor issues |

I'm by far not a pro, but in my eyes these are perfect with few exceptions. There are a wide variety of graphite pencils that work well for sketching and the charcoal pencils are great when the lead stays in. However, the lead doesn't stay in. It has a tendency to break off in little chunks when sharpened. But, for the price, the quality is pretty good. The kneaded eraser works about 90% and feels like sticky tack. The woodless graphite pencil can get messy so I suggest keeping it in a plastic baggie (but that could also be because I broke mine). Overall, this is a fantastic product and I would buy again!

    It's alright. |
    Verified Purchase

Very acceptable graphite and charcoal art kit. The sharpener is very strong, the eraser and kneaded eraser do their tasks well, though the charcoal sticks seem to be a little too solid. The charcoal pencils themselves have taken me time and patience to sharpen. The reliability of the pencils is fair, still sharpening well after a few days of use, they've proved to be quality supplies regardless of the price of the set. I recommend this to anyone needing charcoal and graphite blending/sketching tools for a reasonable, low price.

    Nice set |
    Verified Purchase

I've seen the price fluctuate on this set. I purchased many of these when it was close to $5. Things to improve: In order to keep the pencils in the plastic, I had to cut around the blister pack without damaging the parts that make it reusable. This made some edges sharp so take care if you try this. The kneadable eraser is very small. The sharpener is just a cheap one and not best for these pencils. The pencils are fine. I haven't had any trouble with them. None of the sets I purchased had anything broken. So, overall, it was worth it.

As the title says, I bought it twice and About to buy it again. This is a great set of pencils and worth the price. They seemed to have updated it since the first time I bought it and The pencils seem even better quality, I only had one break on me in my new kit but I think that was something wrong with the wood more then anything, It had a small split in the wood, I recovered the lead though and used it in another pencil, I have yet to use the charcoals. I don't know if I'll ever use them for anything aside from sewing,

Below average kit at average prices! |

This was my first drawing kit, and it actually came free with the lab fee for a class. At first, I marveled at how much easier it was to draw with these pencils than ones I'd used before. Since then, I've had the same this-is-so-much-easier reaction to nearly every drawing pencil I've encountered from a different brand. They seem bizarrely hard compared to other brands. Newsprint tears under the slightest pressure from anything harder than the B. Its 6B draws lighter than a 2B from General. I can't come up with any explanation for it, but these pencils seem to get down in the paper's fiber than other brands I've tried, resulting in patches of shiny, difficult-to-erase smudge. The kneaded eraser isn't terrible, but it's deceptively small. The vinyl is average, but there are better, cheaper alternatives (I like Pentel, like 20 cents each). The sharpener's angle is a bit wider than ideal, too. The sticks-- charcoal and graphite-- seem fairly average, but there seems to be very little variation in hardness between them. For me the highlight of this thing is that unlike many beginner kits, it goes beyond 6B, though making that single darker pencil woodless does seem pretty arbitrary. The only real reason I'm giving it more than one star is I don't feel qualified to judge the quality of compressed graphite or charcoal pencils, and for all I know these are amazing.

A low cost starter kit. |
    Tallahassee, FLVerified Purchase

I recently decided to (re)learn how to draw and needed to get a basic starter kit. Since my talent level is...low...I elected to buy tools that would match my talent and then, if I improved, get better tools. While this set is not top notch, it does provide a good value for the price. The pencils are decent quality, but not (obviously) the high end (and higher priced) sort. The kneaded eraser is small-it ends up being about the size of a marble. The sharpener is okay and the charcoal is decent. If you are a starting artist and want to get going without spending a lot of money, this is a good choice. As your talent improves, you will no doubt want to move on to the higher end (and higher priced) art supplies.

    OK for the price |
    Tucson, AZ, USAVerified Purchase

This is a good item for the price. There were several items that I didn't use, especially the harder pencils. There was a greater variety of items which I felt is OK. I think the kneedable eraser could have been larger. For some reason I had the impression the pencils, at least some of the ones I used, were made of wood that wasn't properly seasoned. Other than that it was OK.

This collection of drawing tools has most things you need in your backpack so you can sketch anytime you get the desire. The eraser is not as clean as I would like so I replaced it with a Mars. Other than that it's great

This is an inexpensive pencil set. They write on paper and work as a pencil should. They were well worth the money we paid for them and arrived quickly. I would recommend them to any young person interested in sketching.

Very good sketch pencil set, especially for my daughter's 8th grade art class. Not the most expensive set but works great for the price. My daughter loves to sketch with these and I like the price and availability on Amazon.

    Nice Sketching Pencils |
    Verified Purchase

Not a sketching pro by any means, but this seems like quite a nice set. Several different types of pencils, plenty of the type that you use most often, a NICE amount of eraser-power, and sharpeners too. Overall very pleased.

Ordered three of these for gifts and every single one had a broken Woodless Graphite pencil. Broken several times over, completely useless, pencil. It's still a really good price, though, and the selection of things is great.

Great set. Works well. The graphite pencil is very delicate. I dropped it on tile floor and it broke into pieces almost like glass. Just be careful, otherwise I love this set and would recommend it to anyone who loves to draw.

I have been looking for the perfect sketching kit and i love this one! I kind of wish the kneeded eraser was a little bigger and it threw me off that it was blue but it really is a great set for any artist, beginning or advanced!

I really like this set because it has different shades of pencils. Definitely what I was looking for my art college class. Very good quality and erasers are awesome. I am happy with them. Just one problem, the sharpener is not very good.

Soft, Medium and harder graphite make your drawing pop! |
    Verified Purchase

The softer to harder graphite make your art look more dimensional and smoother with the transitions. Your art will come alive and pop once you get the hang of where to use the different softness of graphite. Charcoals only ADD to the fun.

There's the graphite pencil. I was sharpening it not hard and it cracked in half. So can't use that anymore. The sharpener is just sh!t. And the wood for the pencils is low quality. Overall the pencils draw pretty good. The erasers are pretty good.

If you're thinking about drawing, just get a Kum or Staedtler sharpner and a set of Staedtler pencils. This set is ok for the price, but you are better off with something better that doesn't cost much more. A Prismacolor kneaded eraser won't hurt either.

For the price, it is definitely a good buy. I'm still using most of it to this day (a few months later). I left it at four stars as a couple of the pencils snapped in half, and overall just felt a little weak. Definitely be careful with these to make them last.

The pencils break easily during sharpening |
    Verified Purchase

The pencils break easily during sharpening. Quality of graphite pencils are okay, but the charcoal ones are not good at all. Charcoal sticks are not of good consistency. Can't beat the price, but I'd rather buy a little more pricey set with better quality than these.

The pencils were so great to draw with and the woodless 8B is definitely my favorite. The only bad thing about this product is that that kneaded eraser is so tiny and it's not very good. Though, the other eraser is great! I would definitely re-purchase this product in the future.

    OK Sketching Set |
    0

The results you get from this set isn't bad. But the pencils are somewhat thin and it seems as if everything has been scaled down. Should not be surprised since it seems that most all products have been cheapened these days. The set does have all the essentials . . .just in a small size.

Bought this as a gift for my niece, who loves to draw. She seemed happy with the pencils, which was great. Love love love- this is a perfect starter kit for budding artists. I am using it to learn to add shading. So much in one set at a very reasonable price. Black Graphite Pencil Breaks Easily |
    Verified Purchase

These pencils are great. They are very high quality and work nicely. There's only one problem I have with these pencils. The black graphite pencil, the one on the far right in the picture, it breaks very easily if you drop it on a hard surface like wood or tile floors. So I would recommend not dropping that pencil.

I bought these because I was running low on my Derwent pencils and I wanted to experiment with charcoal. Quality of the pencils and charcoal is really cheap. This was my first set of real drawing pencils. They will always be special to me. I felt like a real artist. They are definitely great for beginners. Try them!

    Suitable for the price. |
    Verified Purchase

This is about as basic as you can get for the product and price you are paying, if you're a true artist who understand substrate medians and the proper lead type to produce the desired result. For the price I couldn't say you'd get a better product, however it is far from top of the line but suitable for the intended production you're seeking.

I decided to take an art class and we needed to have all different kinds of pencils. This set included all the ones I needed. It's a really nice little set for someone looking to just sketch as more of a hobby, which is exactly why I bought it. However, the only graphite pencil in the set was broken in half when I received it, since there was really no padding in the package at all. Other than that tho, good product, just make sure they ship it safely when you order.

Great starter set at an excellent price at $5.52 with free shipping. Not professional grade but I wasn't expecting it to be. this came to me used with one of the pencils sharpened AND it was not the same brand as the rest of them. looks like someone didn't like the set and returned and they substituted out things for what was originally taken out. maybe its not that big of a deal but when it is being presented to someone as a gift giving something used doesn't look that great.

    Good kit for sketching |
    Verified Purchase

I didn't have to go to Michaels and play coupon pricing games. That's a big win. These were fairly priced from the start. They work well. I'm no professional artist -- more of a hobby for me -- and these pencils work well. No, they did not magically make me a better artist. That would be nice, but it's not the tools that make the artist. These tools certainly won't hold you back.

I absolutely love this product. It gives you all the tools needed for someone just starting out in sketching, or for those who like to do it as a hobby. These pencils blend wonderfully and the erasers and the sharpener are marvelous. I was a little worried these would be awful due to their low price but I will continue buying this set as long as it's available. 5/5 stars!

    Verified Purchase

This is a good item for the price. There were several items that I didn't use, especially the harder pencils. There was a greater variety of items which I felt is OK. I think the kneedable eraser could have been larger. For some reason I had the impression the pencils, at least some of the ones I used, were made of wood that wasn't properly seasoned. Other than that it was OK.

It was low priced and still the quality was nice. This is a great product fro those looking to experiment with graphite drawings. It came as described with 8 graphite pencils from 2H to 6B, Charcoal from soft to hard, and two types of erasers. I have used them in a number of drawings that began with a normal NO. 2 HB pencil, and with the use of this product I increased the contrast of the drawings.

I was pleasantly surprised with this. Nice selection of drawing supplies all in one package. My only suggestion would be to enclose the 'sticks' in the middle portion in a plastic container so they can be kept safely on the drawing board. I put them in a little pet food container which fits fairly well . I would certainly recommend it for someone who is interested in taking up drawing.

    Verified Purchase

most of the pencils as you get into sharpening them either by hand, blade or an electric sharpener I've found that the graphite (and charcoal) are broken in the middle and large chunks come out as I sharpened them. The wood used in the set I received easily splintered as well. As a beginning artist it was frustrating. Save up your money and purchase a better quality pencil (or set), they are out there.

This is a great set as it gives my daughter an opportunity to draw and sketch with professional pencils. Every time you use professional tools for anything, really, there is a great difference in your product. My daughter's sketches look like they were made with proper drawing pencils, and those give her sketches great depth and ability to produce different thickness lines, and all different effects on the drawing.

    Great Pencils, Mediocre Sharpeners |
    Verified Purchase

These pencils shipped and are a great overall beginner set. I am very pleased with the actual product. The pencils in this set draw beautifully, but I only give this product 4 stars because of the sharpeners included with the set. The charcoal sharpener is decent and sharpens the charcoal pencils cleanly, but the graphite pencil sharpener broke the second time I used it. Overall: great pencils, mediocre sharpeners.

The box is impossible to open without braking it, so it can hardly be used as a storage box. All the pencils are good quality, especially for the price. The woodless pencil is really great, use it all the time. Unfortunately, my came broken in half, I blame horrible box on that. But perhaps that's a good thing, now I have "2" woodless pencils! :) For me, I runed out of pencils and charcoal, this one was low price, came in time and saved me. Got 4th star for that.

    Great for beginners |
    Verified Purchase

I really like this set. I'm a complete beginner to drawing so I can't compare to other pencils but I find these smooth and easy to use and control. I took a star off because my 4H pencil after about 2 or 3 sharpens stopped sharpening properly - I'd get it to a point and then a big chunk of lead would come out. Eventually I realized that somehow the lead inside it was broken up into chunks. I haven't had the issue with any of the other pencils but that was disappointing.

Great Pencils, Charcoal, and Erasers!!!!!!!!! |
    Verified Purchase

Amazing combo of pencils and charcoal pencils! Along with the best eraser I have ever used!! It has a professional sharpener that sharpens these types of pencils so effortlessly, a kneadable eraser for the charcoal, and so many different graphite levels! (ranging from soft and dark lead, to hard and precise) Not to mention the levels of charcoal! If you or a family member are an artist, I strongly recommend the purchase of this set, as it is an amazing set to have around.

This is a very reasonable kit for the price. The pencils are good quality and they helped me tremendously. The kneadable eraser wasn't very great quality but it worked. I haven't used the charcoal yet but It seems to be good quality also. I love this set. I do wish I had something better to store them in and anyone who gets this set I would suggest they purchase a product where they can store there pencils that way the graphite does not get fractured on the inside of the pencil.

I wanted to make a sketch for my parents and ordered this on amazon. The delivery was on time, packaging was good and the stuff inside worth the money i paid for. It has different varities of sketching pencils and also a sharepeners and 2 erasers. The kneaded eraser was a new thing for me and i really liked using it. I did not infact the usual eraser much after using the kneaded eraser! Overall a very good package to buy if you are planning to do some serious sketching

Coming from someone who previously sketched only with #2 pencils... this is a great set (and I'm not going back to Ticonderoga, btw). Some of the items were better than others - the kneaded eraser was just okay, and as good as the charcoal was, I wish a chalk pencil was included for highlights. The woodless pencil is wonderfully dark, but it tends to get on everything! I recommend this product for people who want to familiarize themselves with more professional pencils.

    Sketch Away |
    Verified Purchase

I think this is a lovely set for sitting at your desk, sketch pad in hand and the sketching pencils from this nice sized pencil set. I like the various sizes and small thin pieces of charcoal. They all fit nicely in my hand while drawing. I also like the charcoal itself. It is contained on the paper and looks good. I am a weekend sketch artist and there are many pencils to choose from and I like them. I would recommend this to anyone who is fond of drawing with the charcoal medium.

    Fantastic! |
    Verified Purchase

This is a great set. It is more complete than the other similar sets that I've owned. The wood-less charcoal pencil is the best; now I won't get charcoal everywhere when I use it! I got this package in the mail 2 days before the earliest expected arrival date(2 days after ordering). Yay! Only downside, I couldn't get the pencils out of the package without ripping it, though I'd planned to buy a case for the pencils anyways so I wasn't being to careful.

    Verified Purchase

I really should have suspected something was up when I saw the price listed. Normally good art supplies cost a lot but I was trying to save and backfired in the end. The pencils were okay but were too light to work properly as graphite pencils. The charcoal was horrible. Compared to a more expensive brand I usually use, this one barely erased or smudged. The quality itself was bad because it looked as if I was using a pencil. The only thing that worked properly for me were the erasers. I plan on buying another set and this time I won't be picky about the price.

Great as an aid for a young artist, very cost effective, results on canine consumption were somewhat unexpected. |
    Verified Purchase

My daughter likes to draw, and asked for a sketch set. This was reasonably priced, and she was doing some nice work. Until our dog decided to digest a few pencils. The result was a sick dog, a dog who resembled slightly an abstract drawing, and one who's poop was unusual and well smelled by other neighborhood dogs apparently with approval. My review is thus it's great as a drawing device for human artists, but not half bad for an artistic dog, and is well received by the nearby dog community. If my kids were younger, I'd start to wonder about finger paint.

I like these pencils alot, they are strong and good quality for the price. I have better higher brand pencils that were abit more expensive-- Conte and Staelher they are not as smooth or of the same texture but for someone like me, just learning and practicing art these are a really good set to learn with. They come in the commonly used grades for art pencils. I really like the charcoal pencils and sticks also. The sharper is strong, I didn't try the erasers yet, but for less than 5 dollars you can't ask for more nowadays. I'm glad I bought two sets. Shipping was very fast too.

    Fantastic with minor issues |
    0

I had recently got into sketching and wanted a kit to start me off since i'm a beginner. After searching for brands that are inexpensive, I came along this one. The shipping was fast and even came 2 days earlier then I expected. Which I have received on January the 11th. I decided to wait and see how this kit worked out for me, before I wrote a review. All in all this product is very effective for sketching and shading, I have no problems or complaints for using these items. If your looking for for a kit that could help you as a beginner, or your returning to art then I would recommend you buy this product.

It's hard to beat the price for Royal & Langnickel's student-quality sketching kit. I appreciate the variety of tools, which include gum and kneaded erasers and an all-metal (vs plastic) sharpener. The wooded pencils hold up well to heavy use and, in my students' experience, do not splinter with higher-than-normal pressure. Is this professional quality, or a quality suitable for the intermediate/advanced student? No, it is not. (Reviewer Michael's excellent itemized list of supplies is a good start for finding such tools.) But for >$10 this is a great bargain for an older child or beginner.

Worthless set. Charcoal falls apart from the inside with no pressure at all. Graphite pencils are terrible quality and don't sharpen well. The charcoal sticks don't even look like charcoal and just feel terrible compared to any other charcoal product. The sharpener is worthless and will break your pencils instead of sharpening them. The erasers are small and ineffective. This is literally a waste of your money. Just spend a few dollars more on General, Staedtler, Derwent, or literally anything else. A standard yellow #2 pencil is more useful than this entire set.

    Verified Purchase

I purchased this for my partner who is into (amateur, hehe) drawing. She LOVED it! It's the perfect all in one kit and offers various sizes of pencils, charcoal pencils, sharpeners, and erasers. She used the kit along with Mark Kistler's Learn to Draw in 30 Days book and I was impressed! This kit is a great quality for the price, especially for someone learning. Of course, eight different widths of pencils seems a bit odd and she couldn't tell the difference in how they drew. But, for someone more experienced, these would probably come in handy. This would make a great kit for someone interested in drawing without having to purchase a bunch of different items separately.

I am a beginner. I ordered this set of pencil because one of the books I am reading suggests buying it. They came in fast. I couldn't wait to open it and drew a dear with the graphite. I really love it! The graphite goes on smoothly and beautifully. It made my awkward drawing look nicer than it should have been. I tried the other pencils, too. They are as nice as the graphite. This set is such a good deal with so many pencils and two erasers and a two-sized sharpener, and a lot of charcoal( I don't even know when I'm gonna use the charcoal). The erasers and sharpner are just alright to be honest, but the pencils are really great! I highly recommend it and I'll buy again for sure.

I was really happy to find this set for such a great price. It has literally everything you need for sketching, except the paper and of course, creativity, haha. The only thing I wish is that is also included a tortillion, but those are really cheap anyways, so no big deal. I think this would make a great set for anyone who likes to draw and sketch, whether they are just beginning or have years of experience. I was also surprised to see that the sharpener that is included is not one of those cheap crappy plastic ones, it's metal and i'm sure will hold up with years of use. If you've been wanting to order some sort of sketching set, definitely give this one a try, I'm sure you will be as happy with it as I am! :)

    Verified Purchase

This is the first set of drawing pencils I've ever gotten. I'm a hobbyist and a beginner, so high-quality products are not of the utmost importance to me. These pencils are of decent quality, but do the job, and I like them a lot. BUT. The erasers are simply alright, and the kneadable eraser in specific is really small. So you might be better off buying them separately. Also, my graphite pencil came broken! Split in two! I was really disappointed about that... Overall, I'd say this is a great set for any beginner, and the price can't be beaten. But if you're looking for something to do serious or professional drawing with, you should look elsewhere. Rated 4 stars instead of 5 for the broken graphite pencil.

A low cost starter kit. |
    Verified Purchase

Great product, not so perfect on vendor communications.. |
    Verified Purchase

I really like these. They are exactly what I expected. The vendor annoyed me a bit when he sent a somewhat pushy email in which he seemed to indicate that he would not accept any rating other than 5-star. I am not used to receiving such "demanding" communications from anyone, particularly vendors, and was a bit put off. So, on his site, I lowered my rating by one star to 4 stars and wrote back explaining why I did that. However, other than that one annoying experience, as I said to him, I could not lower the rating all that much since his employees really did an excellent job and the product came in great condition and is exactly what I ordered. So, essentially, it deserves a 5-star rating (hopefully, my reaction to him will make him think twice before being so pushy with anyone else in the future.)

    0

    A Nice Starter Size |
    Verified Purchase

Okay...I have to admit this is a bit daunting for a beginner but it is a good place to start. I always promised myself that I'd try to learn to draw and now that I'm retired I have the time to do that. Recently the grand-nieces, nephews and granddaughter have asked me to "draw" something for them. Everyone in my family has always been able to draw very well with the exception of my mother and me...and to be honest we had trouble drawing a straight line with a ruler. I've noticed that since I retired and have been doing more "right brain" activities, my drawings are becoming recognizable and that prompted me to buy a sketch pad, take out the drawing lesson books and buy this set of sketching tools. The set has a little bit of everything you need to get started and do some exploring of usage. It's a great buy! Oh, yes, I might add, if you get one of these for yourself, plan on hiding it because the kids head straight for MY sketching pad and pencil set!

I guess they are okay for the price, but personally I did not like them I wish I could return them |
    0

I bought this sketching kit a few weeks ago, and I have to say that I really do not understand why this kit has good reviews. I am personally not satisfied with it at all. I wish I could return it. Here are two main issues with the set: 1) The lightest pencil is 2H 2) The quality of the graphite is really bad. It seems like the graphite has some white chunks in it, and because of that you cannot get smooth shadings When you want to draw the foundation of your sketch, you want to generally start from your lightest pencil, and it is usually 4H. This set does not come with 4H. I had to go to an art store, and buy a separate 4H pencil (needless to say that the pencil that I bought had a much higher quality than the pencils in this set). I think that it is a big problem. When I saw that it has 18 pieces, and it had good reviews, I thought that the set should naturally come with a 4H pencil. So, be warned, this set does not have a 4H pencil, and the quality of the graphite is not good.

Very pleased with these pencils. |
    Verified Purchase

Let me start by saying that when considering purchasing these pencils, I had considered other sets that were strikingly similar. But I am very glad that I went with this set over the other more expensive pieces. This set is great if you need a refresher on your old snubbed out utensils and erasers, or if you're just getting familiar with your creative side. I found myself doing both quick sketches and full traditional pieces comfortably with this set. In unison with the tools I'd previously purchased, this was ideal for me. I've only used a few other full sets similar to this one, but I must say that this one topped them all. I can't speak professionally, but many professionals I know would be pleased with this set, as well as I am. The pencils are wonderful. The shipping was quick on this product, I received it just on time and everything was in good condition. My only complaint is that on the 2B, the label was completely gone. But that was not a big issue for me. This product suited my needs just fine. And hey, for the price on amazon, you can't go wrong. I would recommend it to everyone I know if I got the chance.

    OK for Beginners |
    Verified Purchase

I'm only a beginner, a true beginner so I thought I would be okay with this set...but it's just okay and I'll probably outgrow it before I go through the supplies. Erasers The erasers are not very good. I made a simple circle with the HB pencil and tried to erase with both the erasers, and neither was very effective, but the kneading eraser was better. I doubt I'l try using the other eraser at all. Pencils Well, the woodless graphite pencil came broken, but just at the tip so I was able to resharpen, but I haven't used it yet. I have used all the other included pencils (4H, 2H, H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B) and I like them well enough. Again, they're good for me for now, but I'll probably want to step up next time I buy pencils. Sharpener Honestly, one of the best parts of this set. It's nothing special, and I definitely think some of the larger ones that you can really get a grasp on woulld be nicer but this does exactly what it's supposed to do. Sketching Sticks These are small sticks in 2B, 4B, and 6B. I really like these, they are fun when you are making the rough sketch. They blend not quite as well as the pencils. Charcoal Sticks Samse size as the sketching sticks, they come in soft, medium, and hard. These are a lot of fun too, and half the fun of charcoal is how messy it is. It's important to note, this variety of charcoal is one that is not easily erased (like vine or willow charcoal) but they blend quite nicely. Charcoal Pencils These come in soft, medium, and hard too. I haven't used these as much, but they are kind of a pain to sharpen. I don't think they offer anything more than the charcoal sticks, so all up to personal preference. Overall I wouldn't get this for the established artist. They would be sorely disappointed. A good beginner's kit though for someone just wanting to pursue art without much experience who doesn't want to spend a lot on materials. I also would be less likely to buy it at the $10 it is now, versus the $6 it was when I bought it.

This is a great set to help a beginner understand the differences and also using a little charcoal for sketching & shading. I thought the price was outstanding. Nothing at all negative about this set IMO.

    Excellent set of pencils |

I love having a variety of pencils for when I'm drawing and was excited to buy these considering my last pencil set was 10 years old. I absolutely love this, its great for all types of drawing and I haven't had a problem on any surface with them. I haven't figured out charcoal yet, so I can't give much on those pieces, but it was definitely worth the buy.

The 21 piece set is a solid starter set for someone who is seriously interested in learning how to sketch. It's a cheap yet well made set that I would recommend once again to those seriously interested in sketching. I would recommend however that you also buy a How To drawing book to go along with it because that is what the set is intended for. Would also recommend having wipes on hand because it can get rather messy.

5-Star, Would Buy Again and Again |
    Verified Purchase

I have bought a total of three sets of these on two different occasions; I bought a double set for my own personal use to share with my sister, and another set recently for a friend. The pencils are tough and won't break easily, the sharpener is super sharp and can sharpen even the crappiest of cheap school-grade or annoying colored pencils, and the pencils write smoothly and don't catch on your paper. I could rave on for days about how glorious woodless pencils are. This one writes smoothly and is tough as well. The erasers included are both excellent as well. The graphite and charcoal sticks are nice but I personally keep them separated in plastic baggies so they don't get medium all over my kneaded erasers, other drawing utensils or pencil cases. The charcoal pencils are also very nice but sometimes pesky when sharpening. The soft ones' charcoal can break easily so you have to sharpen them carefully. This is an excellent set, especially for its price. Overall this is a five-star product that I love and would recommend.

I bought this a little while ago, however I was waiting to review this to make sure I knew as much about the product and how much I like it. Keep in mind that I love using supplies whether cheap or not as money is not an indicator of the quality. I bought this simply to experience a new set of charcoal supplies, and I had a bit of spare change. So going into this item had had no bias for or against this product. With that being said, I gave this a 3 out 5 because almost all of the pencils and supplies besides a few (HB and 2H) felt rather rough when I was sketching and or drawing. Even with the lightest stroke, it was like sketching with I was scrapping the pencil against sand paper. Now it wasn't that severe but it's the only way I can describe this when I say rough. Also again, with the lightest stroke it was as I was pressing rather hard as the lines would harsh and bold. Not to mention the while it blend well, it would streak big time due to the harsh lines if i brushed against the line. In turn this caused me to draw extremely lightly, and which was kind of awkward for my hand and wrist, but I adjusted. It may be that I received a bad batch of charcoal, or it may also be the case that his is simply how they are. The sharpener, well it's a sharper. Not much to say there. It got the job done and that's all I could ever ask for. The charcoal sticks were nice though which was a surprise, but again (slightly) rough lines but after using it more I rather like the rough lines from the sticks, especially on grey paper. The eraser(s) felt like rather gummy and over time it felt like it was starting to get weak, slightly ineffective, and simply start breaking off. Despite all this, I give it a 3 out of 5 because it served it's purpose and it was simply an okay experience. It wasn't bad and it wasn't great. Just simply okay.

    Great Product; Great Price |
    Verified Purchase

This is a great pencil set for beginning artists. I purchased this for my 9-year-old, and the pencils have held up very well. He draws nearly every day, and these pencils have become a nice staple to his art supplies. The set comes with a variety of pencils (hardness) with both graphite and charcoal "leads". The price is very reasonable and the quality is good. This isn't a comprehensive art set, but it is a good start to building a nice collection of sketch and/or art supplies. Excellent purchase with no regrets.

Smooth, but some of the pencils are hard to erase. |
    Verified Purchase

We bought these for my daughter who loves to draw! This is a pack of 9 graphite pencils, 3 charcoal pencils, 2 erasers, a sharpener, 3 graphite sticks, and 3 charcoal sticks. The graphite pencils come in H, B, HB, 2H, 2B, 4H, 4B, 6B, and there is an 88 that is a full graphite pencil, no wood in the pencil at all. All of the graphite pencils work great and are very smooth. The only problem with them is the lighter colored ones don't erase very easy, the dark ones do. The three charcoal pencils come in hard, medium, and soft, none of which she has used. Of the two erasers, one is a plastic eraser, and one is a kneeded eraser, both of which wok good. The charcoal sticks also come in hard, medium, and soft, and the graphite sticks come in 2B, 4B, and 6B, all of which have not been used either. The sharpener on the other hand has been used and is sharp and works great. I gave this 4 stars because of the light graphite pencils not erasing well.

My daughter loves to sketch and draw so we got her this set to allow her to feel a bit more professional. She loves it! The only thing I would have liked to see in this set would be perhaps a set of "instructions" as to what the different strengths of pencils are used for, or even what the strengths stand for. I am sure professional artists do not need something like this.. but for beginners like my daughter, she is kinda lost when it comes to knowing what each kind of pencil is or how to use it properly. But she goes on her merry way and is having a blast creating and using them as she feels is right.

Does the job for sketching- Great variety of media for the price |
    0

I bought this set out of sheer desperation because there are no art supply stores around for miles, and I was feeling artsy. I already have a lot of different graphite media, but I needed some more of the softest B degree pencils, and I try not to use my more expensive brands just for sketching. That said, this set is fine for sketching and even for creating more detailed drawings, but it is not a professional grade set. I knew that from the start, so I was not expecting these to perform like the Staetdler Lumograph , Derwent, and Prismacolor Turquoise pencils I use for finished drawings. With the Royal and Langnickel set you get a nice variety of drawing media in various degrees of softness at a very reasonable price. It gives a beginning artist or student a chance to use charcoal sticks and pencils (great fun, awesome learning tools) as well as graphite. I had fun with the graphite sticks too- these are nice when you want to block in large square objects like buildings or fill in large areas with tone. They are messy, so if you are shopping for art supplies for young kids, be warned. Bits of charcoal and graphite will find their way into the carpet, where everyone will tramp in it and grind the stains really well. Hard to clean graphite and charcoal out of carpets and upholstery- I know from much experience. The erasers are so-so, and I rarely use the little sharpeners, so I cannot comment on that. I bout this set for the pencils and drawing sticks (comes with velvety smooth vine charcoal too!), so I am not bothered by the lower quality erasers. I am going to attach a couple of photos to show one of my sketches I made with items from the set. I used most of the graphite pencils, hard and soft, for this piece, but I supplemented with a couple degrees of Lumograph too- I keep all kinds of stuff in the case with its original contents, as you can see in the one photo.

I bought this because i'm not a huge professional artist that spends hours drawing and making a living off of it. I like to sketch, draw and cartoon. and this set allows me to do that with multiple tools and pencils. I love the variety and quality of these pencils. Including charcoal not just in pencil but block also, along with graphite bars. really lets me control where things go. I really love the woodless pencil, even though it doesnt keep a good point, (for long) But, i know that in about a year or more i will come back and buy another one when this set gets all used up. Thanks for a great product. I am truely happy with this set.

    There's better. Much Better |
    Verified Purchase

When I first started out doing art I didn't care so much about quality. I just wanted pencils that did the trick. Having more experience under my belt I see that quality does matter to a certain degree; and this kit fails to impress me in that area. The pencils included are cheaply made, which makes them a pain to sharpen. Too much energy is spent trying to sharpen them that you'll forget that you're working on a drawing. The white eraser is a bit too gummy like, a few uses and I already feel the structure beginning to weaken... The sharpener is OK. But there are better ones (See my list below after review) The only thing I liked about this kit were the charcoal sticks. I like to sharpen mine with sandpaper and these do produce nice dark tones. This product receives two stars because it really isn't the kind of quality you should be seeking out in your practices. In the end the flaws just add aggravation which can easily be remedied by buying a better quality. If you want to REALLY get a good start at art (or good quality for continuing art), then I'd suggest the following: (Pencils) You can't go wrong with either Faber-castell or Staedtler. I myself use the Staedtler Mars Lumograph. You can find these in kits, containing various degrees (A good range for the beginner would generally be 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 7B and 8B. Pencils ending in H are harder and thus produce lighter tones while pencils ending in B are softer and produce darker tones.) What will also work are the Ticonderoga pencils, which come in packs of 12. (Erasers) I recommend the Staedtler White eraser (which is fairly cheap. Mine cost me about 2$ for a fairly good-sized stick), but Pentel also works just as well. As for kneaded erasers, these are usually used to eraser thicker, heavier material like charcoal, but I recommend either Sanford or Prismacolor. Do not use any pink erasers for art, They leave a nasty pinkish residue on your paper and don't erase as good as the white (Infact, the only thing I ever use pink erasers for now is erasing stuff off of walls and desks.) (Paper) You'll see terms such as 15lb or 60lb. These indicate the thickness of the paper, with standard copy paper being 20lb and bristol pads coming in weights around 90 to 300 lb. Higher weights are for mediums such as painting, charcoal, ink pencil, etc., Each paper also has its own texture, with some more coarse or more smooth than others. Hot pressed paper means that it has a smooth texture which is ideal for drawing detail and drawing with graphite and pen. Cold-pressed paper on the other hand has a coarse texture to it, which means that it is more absorbent and allows for layer build up, and so this is ideal for painting. You'll want to choose texture based on which medium you'll be using. Acid-free paper is preferred as a high level of acid will tend to ruin your artwork with time. I'd advise not to buy expensive paper if you're just starting out and just stick with printer paper. It's cheap and you'll be making a lot of practice sketches to burn through your supply. Strathmore is a great choice. They make paper for all kinds of mediums. (Sharpeners) You'll want one similar to the one included in this package, but bought from an art/ office supply store. The one included in the package was not as good as the metal one I picked up from Michael's for about two dollars. But if you REALLY want to get serious with it, I'd spend a bit more and get the KUM long-point sharpener. I use it almost exclusively and it is the best sharpener I've ever used. You can buy them here on Amazon or at any other art supply website (I've yet to see them sold in a store, unfortunately.) But it's a bit more expensive than your average sharpener (Mine was $10, shipping included). But it's well worth it, considering the fact that you save more wood and get to the point easier and faster. (Staedtler also sells a sharpener that is well-received here on Amazon. I've never tried it but it has glowing reviews) Overall, don't get this kit; infact, don't get a "Kit," at all. Do a bit of research and get supplies separately. It's a bit more painstaking but in the end you're getting better quality products. You may save time and cash going for this product, but you'll be doing yourself, or that aspiring artist you know, a great disservice by giving them a poorly-made product.
