I received these pens and have used in a couple of art projects. One pen appears to be a little dry but a little hot air from blow dryer helped. Good value for price.

The only thing that would make these better is if they were fine point. It is really hard to find a fine point white pen of any kind, especially the kind that will work on black tiles.

Wonderful new tool in my painting arsenal of supplies |
    North CarolinaVerified Purchase

These white gel pens write on so many different surfaces - I think perhaps I have only discovered a fraction of their uses so far. But I was so impressed with the way they worked, I went and ordered another set of the colored gel pens. I especially like that they work so well on a surface that I have already covered with a shiny protective surface. That has made so many more uses possible. Look forward to finding even new ways to use these versatile pens.

    They work |
    LA

My backup envelopes arrived at the last minute, at which point, I suddenly decided to switch over to them. My invitations already arrived from the print shop 2 weeks later than expected, so I went to Michael?s in a mad dash to look for white gel pens with which to write on my new (blue) envelopes. I settled on these pens, mostly because they were the only ones that were the right line weight (pen, not marker). I can?t comment if these are the ?best? white gel pens out there, but I will be sticking with them if I ever have to use white ink again because they just work. Not all gel pens I?ve tried do, especially the white ones, and I actually grabbed the store?s entire remaining stash of these pens because I was afraid I would run into problems and couldn?t afford to waste time on a second trip to the store. However, I had no issues, and I think that these work very well. Maybe not as well as some artists might like, but for addressing envelopes, they were perfect. No shaking or tapping to get it working, and although not completely uniform (there are no unintended gaps in the writing where the pen stopped working, just that some parts are more white / opaque than others, so no one is going to mistake it for being a professional printed job, but everything is completely legible), ink flow was smooth. If you?re willing to spend the time to get it perfect, the pens might perform even better (ink seemed more uniform when I made a conscious effort to write lightly), but I was more interested in addressing 40 envelopes, stuffing them, stamping them, and getting them to the post office in 2 hours. Bottom line: I appreciate the lack of stress and fuss.

    Great Item |
    Verified Purchase

I design and hand paint greeting cards for my personal use. Some of the card stock I purchased has a dark color for the outside and white inside. The dark outer surface does not work for my drawings/paintings, so I turned the cards inside out. But now the inside did not work for writing...until I got these white pens. Problem solved -- and at a reasonable price with quick delivery. I really love Amazon.

nice product, but can smudge and mix with dark ink mistakes you're trying to cover up |
    Verified Purchase

I bought this product as sort of a white-out pen, so that I could apply white-out to a finer area in a more deliberate manner rather than accidentally gooping on too much with a brush from a bottle. However... Well... Just read the title of this review! I would advise careful, slow applications, after all layers of ink have dried. Perhaps there are better uses for this product. It does produce nice, white ink, after all. :o)

    Pretty Convenient if Imperfect |
    Verified Purchase

The white gel ink for these pens are opaque and nicely thick enough for adding white finishing highlights to art. The ink flow is somewhat inconsistent though, delivering a big glob of white ink when you first put it to paper, then trailing off to nothing. If you want more flexibility in adding white touches, I suggest that you use white opaque acrylic paint with a very fine brush instead. But these pens are much more convenient. Nice that these come in a pack of three, since the pens' ink runs out faster than normal pens. The pen's barrel is translucent so you can see the level of ink left.

Does not work well over various black inks. If you're like me and heard this was great for highlights I would recommend that you keep searching. Pentel Presto is the best I've found so far.

    Perfect for highlighting drawings |
    Verified Purchase

I run through these faster than I can keep them on hand. Sakura has the most consistent quality of Gelly Roll white pens on the market that I've found and I find them to be invaluable for detail in my ink drawings. Other pens on the market get spotty or scratchy halfway through in the barrel. Fantastic product.

MAKE YOUR OWN STATUETTES (Review #14) |
    Atlantic City, N.J. USA

(This is fourteenth in a series of reviews describing products used for the making of PHOTO STATUETTES. To start at the beginning please click "See all my reviews" and backtrack to "MAKE YOUR OWN STATUETTES" [Review #1]). White pens are not as reliable as black ones, something to do with the pigment, they say. White pens, even the good ones, are known to clog up. Exposure to water will often rejuvenate them. This can take up to a week or two, however. The ones I like best, I mean, besides Sakura, are: Sanford Uni-Ball Gel Impact Pen Open Stock, White, 12 pens per Pack and Uni-ball Signo Angelic UM-120AC Gel Ink Pen - 0.7 mm - White Ink. These pens write on paper, laminate and other materials. It is difficult to sit in judgement of these pens because choice depends upon the type of line you seek. I find it to my benefit to keep a variety on hand (although by way of testing I've accumulated more than I can use). BASELINES AND SIDELINES: My current project is the bust of a man. He's wearing a black jacket against a dark background. The photo has one shoulder partially cut off. Here, obviously, shall be my sideline. Busts require a baseline and often a sideline unlike full-length statuettes that require neither. Here is where a triangle comes in handy as the sideline must be perpendicular to the baseline, forming a perfect right angle, and, a clear plastic triangle enables us to draw these lines. I am a product designer and use these for adding highlights to sketches. So much easier than gouache! I have even started sketching on grey paper and brown craft paper using these and black pens. These write pretty smooth on coarse paper, but they skip sometimes if the paper is too smooth or you are using them over top of wet marker. They are the best white pen option I have found, and they're cheap too.

I am very pleased with being able to purchase these pens from amazon. As an artist, I love working with these and in my area they are impossible to find. Makes me want white brush ink |
    Verified Purchase

I've heard of artists using white acrylic paint on their drawings. That would probably work better than these little pens. They're good for drawing on black surfaces, but you have to reapply the gel over and over to get a solid white. If you want quality white ink look into Deleter brush inks.

Not as white as I was hoping |
    Verified Purchase

I do a lot of black and white inking work with all sorts of drawing pens and markers. Thus, when I discovered these white ink pens, I just had to try them out. However, I was pretty disappointed with these Gelly Rolls. No matter how much I try to apply, the marks these white pens make don't actually end up white enough. Even long after my black ink dries, the white ink of these Gelly Rolls instantly turns to a muddy gray when I apply it to my work. I was expecting more of a white-out sort of consistency. Needless to say, I was disappointed.

This Christmas I ordered custom-made Christmas cards and the inside page with the message had a navy blue background. I realized I would need a white pen to sign them and naturally checked to see if Amazon had anything I could use. The surface of the card was somewhat slick and these pens worked wonderfully. My signatures were bright and crisp. I will be using them to sign some of my art photographs in the future. I would definitely recommend them.

    ElsewhereVerified Purchase

I need white pens for highlights. My favorite for a while was the Sanford Signos white pens but the first one I got abruptly stopped working and the second one didn't work right from the day I got it. While they were lovely when they ctually worked, I don't want to have t be buying a new white pen every couple of weeks. I was previously using the Sakura white Glaze pens and I do like them, but the problem is that they come out clear (since it's a glaze) and you don't really know until it dries how opaque it is or if it was too thick/thin of a line, etc. These come out white and stay white, and they work wonderfully. Of course they have some trouble over waxier material (like colored pencils) but they WILL work if you have a little bit of patience. They're also pretty cheap but they work really well!

Awesome little pens for white lettering on RC car tires! |
    Verified Purchase

I have a Tamiya Sand Scorcher and these pens were perfect for the white lettering on the sidewalls of the tires. Dries nicely, doesn't rub off. Yellows a bit over time but that's no big deal, just go over them again. I don't have a very steady hand but my tires came out perfect and took about 30 minutes to do all four. (ok, maybe 45)

I am not an artist, but I do really love to work with all kinds of media - paints, fabric, paper, wood. I have always had a need to add white touches/accents, but could never find the right paint/marker to do it. I don't remember how I stumbled upon these pens, but they are GREAT!! I can use them for so many projects. Most recently I used them to write text on dark green cardstock. The white gel flowed brilliantly and the bright white really popped (though I went over the letters 2x). I completed my whole project with about 3/4 of one pen, so the 3-pack will last me a while. I am really excited to have found these and have many new ideas on how I can use them after reading others' reviews!

I have recently started getting back into drawing and realized I was missing a medium that I could use for highlighting my work. I originally picked up another brand of white gel pens at my local art store and was beyond disappointed with them because they didn't seem to show up on my work. So I started looking around on Amazon and found the Sakura brand and I must say they are absolutely perfect. The color is very opaque and very visible as highlights with pencil /color pencil/and watercolor work. Love love love it!

    These are the best! |

I've tried many brands of white pens over the years and to put it simply, these are the best pens that I've ever used. They show up great on any paper that I use, including black cardstock. Yes, I said cardstock. These pens work great on cardstock for my greeting cards. For the folks that are having issues using these pens on cardstock, I'm not quite sure what to say because it works perfect for me. These pens always have a smooth, consistent application and have never clogged on me, unlike those Ranger white pens....

I love these pens, they work so well and glide on very easy for the most part. I love that they are waterproof, I do find that when I'm not using them for paintings or drawing but on some of my sculpts that the pen has to be directly up for the ink to flow smoothly but that's okay.

Pretty great gel pens with one small flaw! |
    Verified Purchase

These are great, simple white gel pens. The only issue is you really have to make sure the cap is on, or else the pen will dry out very quickly and be unusable. And since the cap is a little different from the average pen, you really have to check to make sure it clicks. Other than that, a great bright white gel pen that shows up on tons of surfaces!

Not good for cardstock; pale; clog |
    Verified Purchase

They aren't terrible pens, I guess, and they'll do in a pinch. But they aren't great either. I bought them to work on cardstock and they just plain don't work for that at all. But on regular colored paper they're okay. They tend to clog and interrupt the flow of what I'm doing, leaving a choppy look. And it's a little pale for my taste. I'll keep looking for something better.

No More Clogged & Dry Tip!! |

Having been struggling with a Pentel Sunburst pen for several months I'm so relieved to find a white gel pen that works so much better. I use white ink pens to add details and embellishments to my watercolor and acrylic ink paintings and these are perfect. They worked straight out of the packaging without me having to shake them and scribble endlessly to encourage ink flow. They even work on canvas and textured papers, which is a huge plus! And you can't beat the price.

    Ink skips too often. |
    Verified Purchase

I got these pens to write on brown paper. An artist I admire (Will Terrell) told me this is what he used. I didn't like them that much. The color is mostly opaque, but they are driving me crazy because they are constantly skipping. They will randomly stop working and I have to shake the pen every 30 seconds. These pens do make a good arm workout though. Anyone have any good suggestions for white gel pens?

These Pens Work Fine But Can Dry Out At Times |
    Verified Purchase

I'm an artist and it helps to have the white ink for highlights and ect... The only problem I have with this pen is that sometimes the ink can run dry, so I recommend having a separate sheet of paper with a little bit of dried black marker on it, so you can scribble on it and activate the ink again. Other than that, if you need a white ink pen, this is not a bad choice.

We use these exclusively on black paper, this is our third set, and I cannot recommend these highly enough. Very smooth and vibrant. Gel pens have improved a lot since the first generation which discouraged many people from using gel pens on black paper and subsequently it has gotten hard to find black paper. Time for the paper makers to bring back the black paper!

    Pens worked great |

These pens work great when I used them on my drawings. They work especially well where I have a lot of black ink and need just a touch of white to provide a little bit of detail.

    Easily Clogs |
    Virginia, USAVerified Purchase

I learned with these pens that you definitely get what you pay for. The ink does not flow smoothly nor evenly and easily clogs. I wound up getting the Uniball white pen and being much happier with that purchase. These may be good for thinner paper that is smooth (I was using card stock) and for a project that doesn't require a lot of detail.

Super cool on black paper! |

Get the ink started on a scrap piece of paper first and it rolls out smooth. Great for doodling or writing on dark papers or adding detail to stamped images. The ink dries quickly and provides a stark contrast.

    Pretty good |
    Verified Purchase

Like every other gel pen, it takes awhile for that real ink to come out. I haven't tried this on crafts but I tried it on paper, on sharpie backgrounds and it was pretty good. I will use these to highlight any mistakes I make. I think it will do a fine job. These should last a loooong time too, unless you are an arts and crafts person using it frequently. Still, 3 for 5.65 is nice. The ink itself, when it's first coming out it's a little grey but when it starts to really come out, it's white.

    perfect! |
    New YorkVerified Purchase

the ink on these is great - i use it for highlights on artwork. it flows really smooth and has a super fine tip so it can make for some real nice detailing. my only problem with the product is that on amazon it's kind of expensive. i got mine at joann's, it was $4.99 there and i used a 50% off coupon and got it for $2.50 - so yeah, $6.50 is kind of a lot for these - but it is still way better than the uniball signo and pentel sunburst.

    Exactly What I Needed |
    Charlotte, NC, USAVerified Purchase

I bought these for a very specific purpose: I create handmade ornaments, and had a request for teacher gifts that had the names of the students on the ornaments. I used these pens to write on wood shapes that were painted with acrylic paint. I bought black pens as well, which write much more smoothly on the surface. If you do use these for a similar purpose, do NOT use a brush on sealer, because they will smear even after drying overnight. Otherwise, I have no complaints. To see how they look on painted wood, go here: [...]

    Great so far |
Baton Rouge, LA, United StatesVerified Purchase

I haven't put this pen through long term testing, but it has worked wonderfully on a first trial. I bought the Ranger Inkessentials white ink pens because the book Totally Tangled recommended them and I'm usually very happy with Ranger products, but I was very disappointed. The Sakura Gelly Roll white pen is vastly superior - writes smoothly with opaque coverage. I have a Sanford Uni-Ball Gel Impact Pen in white on order that has very positive reviews; can't wait to see how it performs compared to the Sakura.

Ok, but exactly what I wanted... |
    0

I was so happy when these arrived in the mail, but upon using them, they- •Did not produce a good white ink, instead they only made a milky/foggy version of the original color under the ink, even after many dried layers. •And they were very difficult to use. The way you use a normal pen is you place it on the paper and write, yeah? With these you get a double line when u do that. Instead, I had to very carefully hover my pen over the paper and have the gel ink half drip half stick onto the paper. I used it on many different surfaces- black paper, colored pencils, markers, fabric... It's simply just a bad pen. Wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but I will still put them to use.

    Great with color pencils |

These pens are perfect for adding highlights- they give my colored pencil drawings much more depth. They are opaque if you let a lot of ink flow in one spot and they dry fairly quickly on most media

Fun to use Gelly Roll pens |
    Verified Purchase

I use the Gelly Roll pen for tangling on dark paper. It works well for that. I've also used it for touch ups and highlights on drawings, but think a correction fluid pen might work better for that purpose.

    Perfect. |

Ink flows very nicely and does not stop up like a lot of gel pens do. I personally use this in my drawings for adding highlights to eyes/skin. It works wonderfully. It's a very nice, clean white color.

White? Yes! These pens glide across the paper and the white ink adds a new and fun dimension to your craft projects. They make me want to buy my paper in anything but white so I can use them all the time :)

    fine |

Works prettt good. Will pull up ink if you just draw over it. Using this for white out, the best method I have found oa to apply it using a stipple method (dots instead of lines). Can ink back over it fine.

A bit disappointed in performance. Really hard to see the white at times. I should stick with the ones from Japan....Signo...Uni-ball. I was curious about an alternative pen. These will do in a pinch, I guess.

Didnt know pens could be annoying |
    0

It was a good product expect I had to constantly make scribbles because the ink did not want to come out of its pen. So that was pretty annoying but other than that very bold ink (except on white paper of course )

    Wee Wittle White eWaser |
    Verified Purchase

Easiest way I've found to un-correct markups. Allows me to track my pen marks and white them back out, a real help in my profession. Does not feed as smoothly as I'd like, but few things I've found in white do.

I use on my traditional drawings and it works well! Takes just a second sometimes to get the amount of white I want. I wait for the first layer to dry, then I go over it again. But this is only every now and then.

White ink works well on dark calendar pages |
    Verified Purchase

I bought a couple calendars for 2016 that have darker paper, where regular blue or black ink wouldn't show up well/at all. These work great! The white ink is opaque so it shows up well and it doesn't smear. Fine tip.

I love these for my black or dark colored mats for my prints. I always get them started on a blank piece of paper first though just in case it doesn't start flowing right away or starts with a blob. It has done neither but I will continue to do it this way. I love these!

    Not so good |
    Verified Purchase

I tried these over sprayed (and dried) ink - the white almost disappears. It turns into a pastel of whatever color you put it on. I wanted white - you don't really get white. If you are using it on dark colored paper it's probably good, but not on top of your own art.

So far so good.: ) |
    Verified Purchase

I bought these to address dark blue envelopes. I have found that writing quickly makes the ink lighter, so write a bit slower for a more distinct look. They take a little longer to dry than I expected, so be sure to leave them undisturbed for several minutes. So far so good. :)

    Verified Purchase

I love these pens, they work so well and glide on very easy for the most part. I love that they are waterproof, I do find that when I'm not using them for paintings or drawing but on some of my sculpts that the pen has to be directly up for the ink to flow smoothly but that's okay.

The ink is a bright white, and writes very smooth (some gels can be scratchy) and write almost instantly without coaxing (even after repeated use) like you have to do with other gels. Pen is a little slim for me to hold but it preforms so well im happy to have it in my crafting supplies

This is for all artists looking for something to cover up mistakes or to create white details in your drawings. Let me tell you these ink pens are great. These are the first Gelly Roll pens I have used. Still trying to decide if I like them as much as the other types of drawing pens. I love my white gelly roll pens! They work great on a variety of dark colors, and I've even used them on white paper to erase black pen lines (like an eraser). Absolutely love these original Gelly Roll pens from Sakura. The quality is unrivaled, even when compared to more expensive brands like Uni-ball or Pilot. I've had these for several months now and they still work great! I used these on dark or Kraft paper envelopes and they show up very well. I bought this for my sister who is an artist. She says they are awesome and they work perfect. I have seen her using them and her drawings are amazing. The pens don't make her drawings awesome but she knows how to use their power. I'm so happy I could make her happy and she is perusing what she loves using these pens.

    Very nice pens |
    Verified Purchase

Very nice white pens with a smaller tip than the Uni-Balls. The white ink isn't quite as bright as the Uni-Ball pens but is still a vibrant color. I use them both for doodling on black paper and on leather and they look terrific. Keep a paper towel handy to wipe off your nibs to keep the ink flow smooth and you'll be happy with these.

    Perfect on black |
    Verified Purchase

I often have to mark up printouts with fields of black. These pens allow me to make edits inline instead of drawing a line to the margin of white and cramming the comments there. The tip is fine and the ink dries very quickly. A+ I tried a similar (and more costly) version and it didn't perform as well at all.

Great for black Zentangle tiles! |
    Verified Purchase

I bought these to use with black Zentangle tiles. They work well, and definitely show up on the black paper. However, if you are used to other Sakura Micron markers, the tips on these are nowhere near as fine. So it was necessary for me to adjust my drawing technique a bit. But the gel does seem to last longer than other gel pens I've owned.

I am very pleased with being able to purchase these pens from amazon. As an artist, I love working with these and in my area they are impossible to find. I usually have to drive to the next city over and take the chance that they may be in stock. So having a 3 pack delivered to my door is awesome. These pens perform great and they arrived in good time.

Seems a bit like drawing with correction fluid |
    Verified Purchase

They take just the right touch if you're drawing with these. They take a few minutes to "warm up" so to speak. I've noticed that no matter how long you draw with them in one sitting, they can still skip and become gummy. Seems a bit like drawing with correction fluid. Not super happy with these, but they do OK when drawing on black paper.

    Highly recommended |
    Verified Purchase

I bought these to use as highlights in colored pencil drawings. They are working great for that! They run very smoothly and evenly, without any spurts of extra ink coming out, like some brands. These will last me a good amount of time. I will definitely buy these again, when I need to. I think they will work well, no matter the project. Highly recommend them!

    could be more opaque |
    Verified Purchase

It could be a bit more opaque and wish it was easier to layer on top of itself. When you roll the gel pen on top of where you already used it scrapes off the old material and makes it streaky looking if you don't dot the second layer on. Convenient though as it is in a familiar pen form as I don't know how to use the fancy manga calligraphy ink pens etc.

    Sakura white ink pens |
    Verified Purchase

As long as Sakura is making pens I will be buying.. unless I find something better and so far I haven't. I can trust that when I pick one of these babies up it will write for me no matter how long ago I used it last. I personally cannot say that about any other colored ink pens. These are white and work great on dark surfaces and for highlighting your art work.

I like these gel pens |
    Verified Purchase

I like these gel pens, they are great for highlighting. They do seem to have a slight texture to them once the ink dries though, much like white out. It's not a huge issue for me but something that I have noticed. I would prefer the ink to sit a little smoother on the page than this particular ink does, that's the only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5.

Nice pens for details or embellishments |
    Verified Purchase

These are ok. It's not as bright a white as I would have hoped, but maybe I haven't tried enough black papers. I have tried these on black post-it notes, black artist tiles, and black Strathmore charcoal paper. They don't flow as nice and evenly as I had hoped they would, but they are sufficient for detail work and embellishments on pieces created with other mediums.

    Would Recommend! |
    0

I recently bought a pack of these to finish up the details on a birthday present I was making for a friend. For the first white pens I had ever used, they were really cool! For the most part, the ink was opaque and it dried quickly! There were instances where the pen would block up a little, or the ink would be a little translucent, but other than that, they were great!

    Just ok |
    Verified Purchase

I'm on the fence about these. They don't cover well. Leave streaks when covering large area so have to use mainly as accent or correction. That's what I'm now using them for...correcting small lines when I blip dark ink where I don't want it. A little disappointed. I think the ink is too wattery or something. The ink also clogged another of my pens when I wrote over it.

    0

I bought these for use with watercolors primarily, and while they do work it's not as opaque of a white as I expected. Most times on watercolor paper it will either be nearly unnoticeable or the tip with "cut" through the ink on it's way and leave an empty space in the middle of the line I'm drawing. It works well on marker drawings and for other papers, but not as much for the purpose I needed.

    Fantastic for precise highlights |
    Verified Purchase

I use these to add highlights and details to illustrations. They have successfully worked over water based marker, wax and oil colored pencils, ink, soft pastels, dried watercolor, and acrylic paint. Once the ink dries I've even been able to color over it and add new layers of ink. These unfortunately do not work with graphite illustrations. The ink turns into a muddy mess.

    These are so awesome! |
    Verified Purchase

I am a product designer and use these for adding highlights to sketches. So much easier than gouache! I have even started sketching on grey paper and brown craft paper using these and black pens. These write pretty smooth on coarse paper, but they skip sometimes if the paper is too smooth or you are using them over top of wet marker. They are the best white pen option I have found, and they're cheap too.

nice product, but can smudge and mix with dark ink mistakes you're trying to cover up |
    Verified Purchase

I bought this product as sort of a white-out pen, so that I could apply white-out to a finer area in a more deliberate manner rather than accidentally gooping on too much with a brush from a bottle. However... Well... Just read the title of this review! I would advise careful, slow applications, after all layers of ink have dried. Perhaps there are better uses for this product. It does produce nice, white ink, after all. :o)

    Verified Purchase

i love these gelly rolls! a wonderful bright white. sometimes i have to hit the tip to get the gel to start the flow tho'. you can not go fast with these pens. you have to go slow to keep the flow. it also helps to keep the pen straight up while using and not at an angle. for some reason an angle tends to stop the flow. i wish they were not so finicky but so far they are the only white pen i have found to work so far.

The perfect white gel pen! |
    Verified Purchase

I didn't think it was possible to find a white gel pen that writes cleanly. This one is it! It dries quickly, writes smoothly and works perfectly for addressing darker colored envelopes. They don't last as long as I would like but when you buy in a 3 pack, you have a back up for when you run out. I definitely recommend these to anyone needing to write on darker colored paper or envelopes. Work great on grocery bag style stationery as well!

My first package got lost in the mail, and when I contacted their customer service, they were prompt in sending me a replacement one, which was amazing, so thank you! As for the pens themselves, I really like them so far. Sometimes they're not as vivid white as they are probably supposed to be and bleed into other colors, but I'm not sure is that's just me not using them right. They were worth the money though, I enjoy using them.

I had seen this used by multiple people on Youtube but i was still not sure but these pens are really good, I use them for a lot of space/sky work and also highlights for pretty much everything. Sometimes also for corrector for mistakes of maybe the color going out of the original ink line, its pretty handy. And the most important thing I thought that would go bad would be the ink drying out quickly but the ink is really easy flowing and great.

    These work very well |
    Verified Purchase

This Christmas I ordered custom-made Christmas cards and the inside page with the message had a navy blue background. I realized I would need a white pen to sign them and naturally checked to see if Amazon had anything I could use. The surface of the card was somewhat slick and these pens worked wonderfully. My signatures were bright and crisp. I will be using them to sign some of my art photographs in the future. I would definitely recommend them.

Bright White and Very Nice! |
    0

Decently opaque, and the more you layer, the brighter it gets, although you must have the previous later dry completely before adding more, or else it will become patchy and ruin the previous layer. Writes smoothly, but occasionally the pen won't produce ink. Kind of unpredictable. Easily smudges for the first few seconds (which is great for me, as I'm using it for art), and dries after those few seconds (maybe 3-4). Overall, though, I'm very happy with these pens and I'd repurchase.

Good But Not For Vellum |
    0

These are great for absorbent papers like cardstock, but I found these pens don't work on non-porous surfaces like transparent vellum paper. After trying all 3 pens and even putting a foam sheet under the vellum for a little "give," the best I get is a bunch of messy, broken lines full of stops and starts as the ink sputters intermittently out of the tip. I think I need to find a white felt tip pen to draw my designs to really get a clear unbroken white line on my vellum.

I bought these pens to use on my black paper drawing pad. I had previously used a fine-tip oil-based paint pen. These bright white Gelly Roll pens are MUCH better than the expensive paint pens. The pen dispenses the ink smoothly and evenly, without blobs or skips. The tip does not dry out during use, and there is no need to "prime" the flow of ink. The line is pure white and opaque, unlike the paint pens, which require several passes. I just purchased two more packages of these pens!

Can't Live WITHOUT 'EM! These are my 'go to' WHITE pens, for drawing, doodling, writing, whatever, in my Moleskine Black Albums.... I buy two or three packages (of 3) at a time, tho', because there ARE the occasional 'grumpy pen' in there that won't work.... (Sakura, can you FIX THIS??) It's REGULARLY one pen out of every pack of three that's just... dried up, dead, blocked, IDK.... Again, when they work, they are the BEST.... AT reasonably pricing, I figure I STILL get 2 GREAT white pens at a good price....

    Just what I needed! |

    0

I've tried many brands of white pens over the years and to put it simply, these are the best pens that I've ever used. They show up great on any paper that I use, including black cardstock. Yes, I said cardstock. These pens work great on cardstock for my greeting cards. For the folks that are having issues using these pens on cardstock, I'm not quite sure what to say because it works perfect for me. These pens always have a smooth, consistent application and have never clogged on me, unlike those Ranger white pens....

    Perfect for Manga |
    0

I have used many white ink pens, but these are by far the best, both in quality and price. The ink is a pure, opaque white and shows up on almost any given media. (I often use them to add detail on colored pencil, water color and Copic marker drawings.) They can also be used to cover up any small mistakes you make (even over black ink) and the ink doesn't dry right away, so you can usually clean up any mistakes before it dries. ^^ I would definitely recommend these to any artist who is looking for high quality white pens to use.

Great Fine White Line, Useful for Drawing |
    Verified Purchase

Excellent white pen. The ink generally comes out smoothly. I haven't had a clog, but I've always had the cap on when it's not being used. This is the finest point white pen or marker I've used. It's not terribly opaque. I use them to add especially bright highlights to some drawings. I was hoping for white-out opaqueness, but this is more like tracing paper. Details underneath marks will still be visible. The material left on the paper isn't completely absorbed and doesn't bond well. So layering fine details isn't easy.

    Great white gel pen! |
    Verified Purchase

I compared these pens to a white uni-ball Signo I had purchased previously. The uni-ball did not make crisp opaque white lines on the first stroke and would often smear the gel ink around if strokes were layered. The Sakura Gelly Roll performed much better, creating the nice opaque lines I was looking for. Another plus is that I am able to see how much ink is left in the pen at a glance since the casing is completely opaque. The uni-ball casing was a white to opaque gradient that almost completely covered up the ink cartridge in the pen.

GREAT FOR WRITING ON DARK PAPER, NOT AS GREAT FOR COLORING |
    Verified Purchase

I TRULY LIKE HAVING WHITE TO COLOR WITH IN MY ADULT COLORING BOOKS. WHEN WORKING WITH GEL PENS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE A WHITE WHITE ON PAGES WHICH ARE NOT BRIGHT WHITE. PROBLEM, BALL POINT PEN. DIFFICULT TO GET INTO SMALL SPACES WITH A CLEAN LOOK. INK DISPELLS QUICKLY CAUSING STREAKING, WHEN TRYING TO FILL SMALL AREA WITH MORE THAN ONE SWIPE OF THE PEN. BY WIPING THE TIP OF THE PEN BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER USE, ONE CAN AVOID CLOGGING. THIS IS BETTER THAN NOTHING AT ALL IN COLORING AND GREAT FOR WRITING WORDS ON DARK PAPER.

Used Ink to Re-Number DC Batman Maquette |
    Verified Purchase

I own some DC Maquettes. Many of them are limited editions and numbered on the bottom. The numbers a re usually written in white ink and I had a Batman maquette who's numbers were fading. I. Ought is hoping I could trace over the number and make it easier to see and it worked perfectly. I think I pressed too hard with the first pen so it wouldn't write on he porcelain. I tried the second pen, using less force, and was successful this time around. It looks just like the ink used to label the Maquettes after production. Great product, just a little fragile.

I use the gelly roll pen for correction whiteout. |
    Verified Purchase

I came across an unexpected use. I needed a whiteout pen to white out some ink writing in a book. The regular white out correction pen that I used was too sloppy, it released too much white and covered some of the book's print. I glanced towards this gelly roll pen on my desk and decided to use it. Wonderful! It is very precise and whites out just the exact lines and letters that I wanted to cover. So the regular correction pen works better for larger areas and the gelly roll pen works best for the smaller, more precise spots. It's worth it for that alone.

Superior to White Out in My Case |
    Verified Purchase

I really like these. As with any white I've ever found the ink tends to have a pretty inconsistent flow and will occasionally build up in a "puddle" if you're trying to block in a particular area, this of course will leave stroke lines from where the tip of the pen is dragging through the pool of ink so I've resorted using very tightly packed lines to make up the highlights that I'm laying down.and then use Dr. Phil's Bombay White for large areas. Either way, this was way better for me than using white out and I'll certainly be buying more of these when I'm out.

Great pen for any artist |
    Verified Purchase

I have had problems with gelly pens in the past and was recommended this brand by an art group I am in. I love them, they are smooth and roll great on thin or thick paper. They are great for highlight with black work and amazing on black or great background. This is a great pen to have on hand when you need something to pop. The ink does not get gunky or skip while drawing, it does take a second to dry so be patient but that is normal with heavier inked items. I like having 3 on hand so when I use up the first the next is already ready to go. I definitely recommend these.

Love these pens! Exactly what I needed! |
    Verified Purchase

I was iffy about buying since I've had bad experiences with gel pens that performed poorly. But I needed some white gel pens for effects in my watercolor painting and went with this brand because it stated that it was waterproof, I was not disappointed. The white is very vibrant on black and despite some of the paint having been wet, it did not clog, smudge, or slide when I used it. You do not need to press very hard when using this pen. One thing I did not pay attention to was the ball point size, it's bigger than I wanted but that's my own fault. It made a huge difference in my painting's details. Would definitely get again!

    Verified Purchase

These write remarkably well on dark paper as well as on colors such as royal blue and true red. They write smoothly and the line is relatively consistent. You will find that the line is more opaque as you start and stop unless you write very slowly. That said these write much better than other white pens I've had in the past which is notable since I have only been able to find 0.7 mm and 0.9 mm white pens while these are 0.5 mm (I prefer a thinner line). Previous white pens that I've owned have had ink flow issues, even with the larger diameter roller ball. The ink formulation with this pen is a welcome improvement over competing products.

These are the best gel pens in existence |
    Verified Purchase

These are the best gel pens in existence. You can never go wrong with Sakura gel pens of any variety. These white Sakura Gelly Rolll pens are a very nice, bright, opaque white. The gel ink flows easily (I have never had problems with Sakura pens becoming clogged or otherwise not writing, as long as they have ink in them) and generously, as this is a medium (as opposed to fine) tipped pen. I bought these pens for a project I was working on in which I needed to draw different designs on a jet black, somewhat roughly textured background. I also wound up using them to add dramatic highlights to a couple of water color paintings. These projects turned out beautifully and I still have two half-full pens. I'm thrilled with this purchase and will absolutely order them again.

These pens are ok for black paper, but my intended use for these was to add highlights to my drawings. The 'white' ink picks up any color that's under it and gives me grayish highlights. Not what I wanted and wouldn't recommend if you intend to use this over other (waterproof) inks or markers. Edit: I guess it just depends what you're using this pen with. Originally my review was based on using it for highlighting black Pilot ink, Stabilo markers and and Sharpie pens, which didn't work well. I tried this on top of watercolors, it worked very well as a nice opaque white. (Just make sure whatever's underneath is completely dry before adding the white) Also the white showed up totally opaque over a colored BIC marker, which is great. Not the perfect pen, but I'm glad to find out it is at least usable for some things.

Writes smoothly on black card stock. It even writes on brown paper bags! |
    Verified Purchase

I got this because it was highly recommended on several art blogs that I follow for writing on dark colors. I tried this out on different papers including black and navy card stock and brown grocery paper bags. This worked well to produce a smooth, mostly-opaque mark on all of the papers I tried it on except for a very rough construction paper. After using this a few times, I've noticed that there is a definite technique for getting the best results. It takes a bit slower writing speed and medium pressure (a bit less than my usual heavy-handed scribbling) to get the most even, opaque coverage. If it isn't working well for you try changing your pressure and speed. I also used this over colored markers to add highlights. A very small tint of the color showed through this, but this is certainly the best of any of the white roller-ball pens that I have tried. The only thing that I found to produce a more opaque mark would be a correcting-fluid (like White Out) or an opaque white paint (Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleed Proof White is a favorite, a few brands of paint markers work well too).

    They work |
    0

My backup envelopes arrived at the last minute, at which point, I suddenly decided to switch over to them. My invitations already arrived from the print shop 2 weeks later than expected, so I went to Michael’s in a mad dash to look for white gel pens with which to write on my new (blue) envelopes. I settled on these pens, mostly because they were the only ones that were the right line weight (pen, not marker). I can’t comment if these are the “best” white gel pens out there, but I will be sticking with them if I ever have to use white ink again because they just work. Not all gel pens I’ve tried do, especially the white ones, and I actually grabbed the store’s entire remaining stash of these pens because I was afraid I would run into problems and couldn’t afford to waste time on a second trip to the store. If you’re willing to spend the time to get it perfect, the pens might perform even better (ink seemed more uniform when I made a conscious effort to write lightly), but I was more interested in addressing 40 envelopes, stuffing them, stamping them, and getting them to the post office in 2 hours. Bottom line: I appreciate the lack of stress and fuss.

Problems but it Still Worked |
    Verified Purchase

Okay so I bought these due to hearing really good things about these pens specifically, however, I was disappointed when I found that these pens basically won't go on over colored pencil but I just used them with copics and watercolors instead. This is where I found my next problem with the pens, if the line does not show up well or you want a thicker line so you go over it the pen strikes a mark in the gel ink but that is fixable if you adjust how you use the pen. This last problem was the worst in that it simply dries out and gets clogged really easily which can be immensely frustrating. Despite all those flaws for the most part it got the job done when I needed it to but I will probably look for a different brand.

    Nice contrast |
    Verified Purchase

I got these to write on teal metallic envelopes and must say the white ink looks good because it creates contrast. They sometimes start fading away when you are using it and that's a little annoying because you need to re-write the lines, but that's not a big deal.

not good for art over ink |

The ink in these pens does not easily glide over black. It is blotchy when laid down on paper and you will have a very difficult time to draw over black ink, they also have the consistency of white out after going over ink (technical pen). I wouldn't recommend these for art work I would instead use true white paint.

We use these exclusively on black paper, this is our third set, and I cannot recommend these highly enough. Very smooth and vibrant. Take your art to another level! |

These are absolutely fantastic pens. I found out about them from a Youtube Artist, DramaticParrot, who recommended them on tan-toned paper. I had to try it out for myself, because her work looked fantastic. They are incredible - they really make your art pop. I tried it on spots of a drawing of BB-8, and was really impressed with what a difference it made. I think these look great with any colored background. It's bright white, almost neon-like color separates it from the colored pencil white. For the price of an add-in item, I would definitely recommend these, as for a low price, they'll take your art to another level. I already went out and purchased another color of Gelly Roll pen because of my success with this one.

I purchased these pens with great hope after reading reviews, but don't know what the problem is. All three pens won't write anything. Too bad, because I was looking forward to adding some white to some zentangles.

    Great Product, Great Buy |
    Verified Purchase

I purchased these already knowingly that I loved them. I'm an artist who's experimented with many mediums, and searched for a white highlight to use on my pencil and mixed media drawings and watercolor paintings that was both good quality and easily applied. I've tried various white mediums as well as different brands of white gel pens. I could only find singleGelly Roll pens at the store, so I bought a white one to try it out....and loved it. So much smoother than other brand that I tried. It's become a staple in my art supplies, so, being sold in a pack of 3 ( meaning multiple backups for me),on Amazon as an add-on for a better price than the individuals, was a must:)

    Never using again. |

I was really disappointed with this purchase. First of all, the packaging was horrible and the plastic covering wasn't even sealed to the cardboard, meaning the pens were not sealed inside the package; instead they were spread out around the box it was sent in. As soon as I laid down one stroke of the pen, I wasn't expecting to see it fading already on its first usage. When I went over it to cover the faded area, the already dry ink chipped not three seconds after I drew. They hardly show up without multiple stroke after stroke (when they don't chip that is) and are practically useless. I can see that all the reviews are generally positive for this brand and item so this could be just the pens I was sold.

Much sheerer than I expected, was pretty dissapointed.. But looks great on dark paper. If you're looking for a white ink pen for highlights in your paintings, keep looking.

Works well - relieved! (recommended) |

I wanted a pen to use to write on black paper, just write not draw. I went along with the reviews of others and the pictures to make up my mind to select this pen and I wasn't disappointed! No skipping, zero bleed-through even on light weigh paper. I've had two white gel pens some years ago, from other makers, one was ok and another basically failed to work well so I was wary when buying this. This is the best of them all by a mile. It basically works flawlessly. As simple as a normal blue ink pen on white paper. Very happy with this. If I need anymore white gel pens in the future, and I think I will. I am glad I wouldn't have to do any more experimentation. I would be buying this. Well recommended!

    Pretty good |

Like every other gel pen, it takes awhile for that real ink to come out. I haven't tried this on crafts but I tried it on paper, on sharpie backgrounds and it was pretty good. I will use these to highlight any mistakes I make. I think it will do a fine job. These should last a loooong time too, unless you are an arts and crafts person using it frequently. Still, 3 for 5.65 is nice. The ink itself, when it's first coming out it's a little grey but when it starts to really come out, it's white.

    Pens worked great |

These pens work great when I used them on my drawings. They work especially well where I have a lot of black ink and need just a touch of white to provide a little bit of detail.

Super cool on black paper! |

Get the ink started on a scrap piece of paper first and it rolls out smooth. Great for doodling or writing on dark papers or adding detail to stamped images. The ink dries quickly and provides a stark contrast.

I ordered all of the white pens currently offered on Amazon. These pens look cheap, but are actually so much better than the others. I tested them all side by side. If you want a crisp white line- get these first. They are the best at blocking out any color underneath.
