As a semi-professional artist I've tested my share of colored pencils and US Art Supply's brand takes the cake, hands down. The colors are absolutely luminous. They jump out off the paper and-- even if you choose to frame your work-- will shine brilliantly. The application is smooth and sharpening them is a breeze, unlike other brands. And all considered, they are VERY reasonable. I've paid twice as much for something half as good. For this reason I refer this brand to all of my students.

Good for beginners - limited options thanks to lack of red and blended hues |

I'm liking these so far, with some minor technical issues. 1) There's not much in the way of red. There's one pencil that has a distinct red hue, but the rest are all pink and fuchsia, and while there are at least 5 green pencils, having only 1 red just seems ridiculous. There's also issues with orange variation, and too many browns versus not enough distinguished blues. A lot of these colors are way too much of "blue/purple" and "purple/pink" rather than distinctive blues and lavenders and petal pinks. This causes a slight issue when trying to gradate colors, because the blue/purple and the purple/pink are different tones completely, and would look horrific mixed together, one being red undertones, and the other grey or green. It creates a lack of options, which considering there are 36 colors, I didn't expect to be so limited on. 2) The colors are weak. Now, this may be attributed to the fact that they are watercolors. I am normally a prismacolor/acrylic paint gal, so watercolor pencils are a new venture for me, and with that I take the issue of their colors appearing so pale with a grain of salt. If this is indeed due to watercolor characteristics, please disregard this mentioned flaw. 3) The provided "reusable carrying case" is rather annoying. While I love the plastic locking tabs at the top, there are no guards at the bottom that keep each pencil in their respective slot, so if for any reason you move it or bump it, or like me have the case at an angle to make pulling one out and replacing it easier while not at a desk, they frequently all slide over on top of one another into a big cluster****. As soon as I can I will be transferring these in to a real case, so don't hedge your bets on using this plastic one for very long. It's also a bit cumbersome, and awkward if you're planning to fit it in an upright backpack. It might handle a messenger bag, but upright will give issues. Overall I do like the quality of the pencil... they're structurally strong and the cores have provided no issue thus far. I haven't had any problems with smearing either, which I do get with prismas. These are certainly not professional quality, but they would work for someone not restricted to needing specific colors, aka a more flexible art instructor, or a beginner level art student. If you have any intentions on truly studying watercolors, I would spend a little more and go for one that has real reds and colors with actual distinction between the hues. Thats a real issue to me, since there are colors here that just shouldn't be so blended... it really limits your options!

These were great for my thereputic coloring book. |

I am not a pro at using any kind of colored pencils. Actually, I had not used in them in probably over 12 years in an art class I enjoyed. I bought these to accompany an adult coloring book I also purchased on Amazon and that had been recommended to me as something to help me wind down at the end of the day. I was worried that I was not spending enough on the pencils to get real quality, but it was not in my budget to spend any more. I'm really more than happy with my purchase. The colors are true, they are easy to use with water, and even though I fell like they constantly need sharpening, they never seem to run down too much. I tend to use the same blues and neutrals exponentially more than the other colors, and there is not a huge difference in the length of the pencils. For the price, I doubt you can find a better product than this, I would highly recommend!

Average. A little hard - but good color options |

They're ok. Not quite what i was hoping for, but when you're purchasing something online, you're always taking that risk. They're not very "soft", i guess i was hoping for something a little softer. I feel like you have to use a fair amount of pressure to get good color onto the paper. Don't get me wrong, I still use them - but next time i'm in the market i'll probably try a different brand. And in all fairness, i'm not really artsy, and not very educated in different types of colored pencils - so maybe next time I need to do some research before I purchase. On the GOOD side - I like the color options. It's a nice array of colors!

    Better than expected! |

The kids each got a set for Christmas, and they are both avid artists. They are young (5 & 10), so I wasn't sure how so many would hold up. The colors are vibrant, they sharpen nicely, and the case is a surprising bonus. The case stays closed and the boys can keep their pencils separate.

I love this set, colors are in a great assortment and beautiful colors, I can use these dry or with water for a watercolor effect, they blend nicely either by using the colors or with a blender pencil......I would buy these again without hesitation. Very nice set!

I would say they were 4 star water color pencils, I've used better, but at this price they are amazing and I highly recommend them for beginners or casual artists.

I haven't used them but my wife really loves them. Just a tip color with pencils then add water slowly with gentle strokes of a paint brush

    Very nice colors! |

I purchased these for my mom, the artist. She has developed a serious passion for these watercolor pencils. She uses them daily. We both like the boldness of the pencils when water is added and the length is a bit longer than some other brands. The flimsy briefcase like packaging is not a favorite. You might have to consider a better storage unit.

    Packaging damaged |
    Verified Purchase

When I opened the box and picked up the package all of the pencils ended up on the floor. It looked as if someone had chewed the corner and torn open the package. Apparently a fix was attempted with transparent tape-though on the side of the package, not at the site of the damage. While this doesn't affect the quality of the pencils, the case is so flimsy, even without the damage that it is totally unusable. I have just begun to use the pencils. The pencils require quite a bit of pressure to transfer color (as compared to another brand) but it reacts nicely to blending with a damp brush. There are only two shades of purple and these are not especially vibrant, something that I've found now with three different brands. Still searching for the holy grail in vibrance in colored pencils-and that includes Prismacolor. All in all, I am disappointed in the pencils. My hands are sore from the effort it took to provide the examples. Note the muddiness of the purple and dark blue.
